This course was an inspiration to me and also my approach to the assessment and programme of care of patients where I work. I will not go in to too many details of the course or the model itself, I will leave this to you to visit the site and read about it there but the amazing thing about this was how this model of care put the emphasis of care and understanding of the persons problem in to the hands of the patient.
Poppy and Phil explained that by putting the pen in to the patients hand, they can describe the problems, challenges and solutions themselves and enable a better programme of care and a better level of recovery and success.

The model itself is much more in depth that this simple explanation but the main concept is how the power of the pen and the persons own viewpoint can not only help the professionals assisting with the patients care but can also help the patient themselves by self assessment of their problems and solutions.
This model is changing the way we treat and assess patients with mental health problems however it also changed the way I approach positive thinking and goal setting.
You see the power of the pen is so underestimated. When you have problems or face challenges in life it is so easy for our minds to become overcrowded with negative thoughts and the solutions can be so easily clouded by everyday things that the problems and solutions overwhelm us.
By using the power of the pen and writing your problems and challenges down on paper helps you to re-gain a focus to these issues and then enables you to concentrate on solutions.
When a problem or challenge appears in a persons life the tendency is to mull things over in their head, try to think of a solution. However all this does is make you think more about the problem as the mind will not focus on a solution if the problem is dominating their thoughts.

This is where the power of the pen comes in. If you actually write your problem down, then write a timeline from where the problem started and map out how the problem grew to be the issue it is today, you can then break the problem down and focus on a solution. Once the problem or challenge has been written down you can see it and then clear the mind so that the focus is on the solution.
Once the solution has been found the power of the pen can be used too. By then writing the solution down then writing a goal or mini goals towards the solution you can consistently see the solution and maintain your focus as you work towards this.
Do not under estimate the power of the pen, it has sent man into space, it has started wars and ended them, it has created the laws that govern all out lives, it has created the world we live in and everything that you see. All these things started with one thing, one powerful action. Someone lifting a pen and writing!
The power of the pen has changed lives and it can change yours so go ahead, get some paper, lift that pen and use it's power in your life today.

The Tital Model sounds like something worth looking into. Certainly, I've long been aware of the pen, particularly as, so many times, I've started writing and found all kinds of things I didn't know I knew about myself coming out....
Great post, there are studies out there that have found that people often do their own therapy through writing exercises, journaling etc. And any kind of medical, mental, emotional care should be collaborative between the patient / client and the provider... Because while the provider may be an expert in her or his field, the patient / client is the expert on themselves - how their body feels, their emotions and what's going on their heads.... Great post!
